Medication treatment; Are there considerations? Yes~ But, let’s take a deeper look. Understand that I am not a physician and that the best discussion about medications to have is with your doctor. I can share with you common reasons people resist taking anti-depressant medications and shed some light on that. Depression is not uncommon.
The most common reasons for not wanting to take medications are the worry about being seen as “crazy,” the myth that prescription anti-depressant medication is addictive, & concerns about side effects. There is still stigma about mental illness, but if your doctor recommended medication for diabetes or high blood pressure would you question the necessity? Medicine looks at depression as a biological imbalance of chemicals in the brain. Just as high blood pressure medications work in their various ways to lower blood pressure, so do anti-depressants for brain chemicals and depression.
Medication treatment; Safe, proven anti-depressants prescribed by competent physicians are not addictive. Another reason for resistance is the worry about side effects. I have heard some clients say that it will change their personality. No medication can change your personality. Anti-depressants, when effective, help you feel less depressed or not depressed at all! However, research shows that the best way to manage depression is through a combination of medication and counseling.
This is something that I would like to tell you; Pills are not the magical cure. Since they have an effect on the brain it takes a while to work, to bring about the chemical change. It’s not like taking an aspirin when you have a headache and take one and 20-30 minutes later you notice your headache is gone. Anti-depressants work slowly and then one day you begin to notice, “oh yeah, I do feel better!” It’s more likely that others around you will notice you feeling better before you do.
Medication Treatment; Anti-depressants have their purpose, but they can’t work if you don’t take them. It is critical to follow directions. Do not arbitrarily take more if you do not notice an effect, or quit if you dislike a side effect- THIS IS DANGEROUS. Be an educated consumer of health care services and get more information. You can talk to your pharmacist, look on the internet at reputable sites and most of all, have a conversation with your doctor. Ongoing communication with your prescribing physician is imperative, and follow their directions.
The great majority of my clients who have been compliant with pharmaceutical treatment and psychotherapy have experienced success, sometimes significant success. Please feel free to call with questions.
